how to cite this article: noohi s, amirsalari s. history, studies and specific uses of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rtms) in treating epilepsy. iran j child neurol. winter 2016; 10(1):1-8. abstract objective in this study, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rtms) and its specific use for treating epilepsy were carefully scrutinized. materials & methods target researches such as review articles, case reports, books and theses, which had to do with therapeutic method of rtms were surveyed. it is worth mentioning that until the final stages, the search for records and documents related to rtms went on and in the end, the collected data underwent a qualitative analysis. results as the literature review suggests, tms principally applies electromagnetic induction to generate an electric current inside the brain without physical contact. the therapeutic uses of rtms are for a wide range of mental disorders, namely epilepsy, chronic pains, motor disorders and so on. conclusion despite safety concerns and possible side effects, many researchers subscribe to rtms and see a bright future for it.

متن کاملRepetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)-Induced Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgia.
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an effective and novel treatment method that has been approved for the treatment of refractory depression by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The most common side effects of rTMS are a transient headache that usually responds to simple analgesics, local discomfort in the stimulation area, dizziness, ipsilateral lacrimation and, very r...
متن کاملRepetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS): The Neuromagnetic Linkage
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common developmental disorder that is associated with environmental and genetic factors. Neurobiological evidence suggests that fronto-striatum-cerebellum circuit abnormalities, mainly in the right hemisphere, are responsible for most of the disturbed sensorimotor integration; dopamine seems to be the main neurochemical alteration unde...
متن کامل[Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) therapy for Parkinson disease].
In repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), repetitive cortical stimulation induces after-effects, and rTMS has been applied as a treatment for various neurological or psychiatric disorders. Animal studies demonstrated that cortical stimulation could improve Parkinsonism, and a meta-analysis of clinical studies showed efficacy of high frequency rTMS. We conducted two clinical trials...
متن کاملEffect of different frequencies of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on acquisition of chemical kindling seizures in rats
IIntroduction: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) modulates the excitability of cortical neural networks. The effect of rTMS on excitability of cortical networks depends on its frequency. According to the previous reports, a distinction is made between low (<1Hz) and high frequencies of rTMS. Low frequencies of rTMS inhibit seizure but high frequencies increase it. In the curre...
متن کاملThe effect of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on the treatment of aphasia caused by cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
Background: Aphasia is a common outcome of Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) in which clinical interventions have limited effectiveness. Some evidence suggests that noninvasive stimulation of the brain can have beneficial effects in the treatment of CVA induced aphasia. In patients with motor aphasia, repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is used to facilitate long-term improvement i...
